Nei primi anni 1990 il Governo Federale, in collaborazione con tre partner internazionali: Shell Gas BV, CLEAG ltd. (ELF) e Agip International CV: hanno dato inizio al progetto multi-milionario denominato Nigeria Natural Gas Liquefatto Ltd (Nigeria LNG). Per la sua posizione strategica, l'isola ospita diverse compagnie petrolifere tra cui: Royal Dutch Shell, Mobil, Chevron, Agip, Elf.
